System Navigation

System Navigation is a one-one-one support service for adults who are trying to access housing, income, healthcare, identification, treatment, legal supports or other community services.

Our System Navigation service is here to help make accessing services easier.

We work with people in our community to understand what is happening, what has already been tried, and what the next realistic step might be. Sometimes that means sitting down together to complete paperwork. Sometimes it means making a phone call, helping gather documents, connecting with another organization, or helping make sense of a process that has become overwhelming.

You do not need to know exactly what service you need before reaching out.

Support That Fits Your Needs

People experiencing or at-risk of experiencing homelessness rarely have only one concern. While housing may be the immediate need, there may also be issues with income, identification, health, transportation, court, treatment, or other supports.

System Navigation helps people look at their current needs and helping make sense of what services to tackle first while walking alongside them.

This support looks different for everyone because everyone's needs are different.

We Know Rural Access Can Be Hard

Living in a smaller community comes with strengths, but it can also make accessing services more difficult.

Some programs are only available in larger centres. Others may come to the community only on certain days. Transportation may be limited, waitlists may be long, and sometimes there is only one option available.

We understand those realities because this is our community too.

Our role is to help bridge some of those gaps by helping people understand what is available locally, what may require travel, what the process looks like, and what options may exist if the first path does not work out.

We cannot create services that are not available, but we can help make the system easier to navigate.

You Do Not Have to Be Staying at the Shelter to Access Our System Navigation Service.

Cold Lake John Howard Society acknowledges that we operate on Treaty 6 Territory, a traditional gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples including the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway/Saulteaux/ Anishinaabe, and Inuit. We respect the histories, languages, and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and all First Peoples of Canada who enrich our community. We continue to explore our relationship to the land and reflect on what it means to be Treaty people.

We are dedicated to addressing Indigenous homelessness through our partnerships which benefit Indigenous clients, as well as clients facing barriers due to their ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.

There is much work to be done to close these gaps and move towards reconciliation. We are committed to providing support and resources to ensure that everyone in our city has a safe place to call home.
